Sea Fishing Clothing

For boat fishing and any fishing close to the water's edge at night or in challenging conditions, a flotation suit or buoyancy aid is strongly recommended. Many commercial charter boats require them. For daytime beach and pier fishing from a safe position above the water, a quality waterproof jacket and layered thermals are usually sufficient.

Water-resistant means the fabric repels light rain but will eventually wet through. Waterproof (look for DWP — durable water repellent treatment — and taped seams) means the garment will resist sustained heavy rain. For sea fishing in the UK, you want genuine waterproof construction — water-resistant is not adequate in a winter downpour on an exposed beach.

For UK winter sea fishing (November–March), a suit rated to -20°C or the equivalent of three-season insulation is appropriate. IMAX and Daiwa rate their suits using temperature ranges — a suit rated for -20°C will be comfortable fishing in 0–5°C air temperatures when combined with proper base layers underneath.

5mm neoprene waders are suitable for wading in UK sea temperatures from autumn through spring. In summer, they may feel too warm. Breathable waders (Gore-Tex or equivalent) are more comfortable for long sessions and walking distances but provide no thermal insulation — pair with thermal underlayers in cold water.
