When choosing monofilament for sea fishing in the UK, you need a line that can handle saltwater conditions, casting pressure and abrasive terrain. Breaking strain is critical. For general beach fishing, many anglers use lines between 12lb and 18lb as a mainline, often paired with a shock leader when casting heavy leads. If you’re targeting larger species like cod, rays or conger, stepping up to heavier mono or using stronger leaders is essential. Shock leaders are a must for long-distance casting. A typical setup uses a lighter mainline combined with a heavy monofilament shock leader (often 50lb–80lb) to absorb the force of casting and prevent crack-offs. This is especially important when using pulley rigs or casting big baits. Abrasion resistance is another key factor. UK sea fishing often involves rough ground, rocks, mussels and wrecks. A tougher mono line with higher abrasion resistance will help prevent cut-offs and lost rigs. Diameter also affects performance. Thinner lines allow longer casting distances and less drag in the tide, while thicker lines offer more durability. Many anglers balance this by using a thinner mainline with a thicker leader. Stretch in monofilament is actually an advantage in sea fishing. It helps cushion powerful runs from species like bass or smoothhound and reduces the chance of hooks pulling free, especially when using long rods and fixed spool reels. Colour can help depending on conditions. Clear or light blue works well in clean water, while darker greens or browns can blend into mixed or murky seabeds. Finally, always rinse your line after saltwater use and replace it regularly. Salt, UV exposure and abrasion can weaken mono over time, and fresh line can make a noticeable difference in both casting and fish-playing performance.
