Sea Fishing Reels

For most UK beach fishing with monofilament, a 6000–8000 class fixed spool is the standard. This gives enough line capacity for distance casting (typically 0.30–0.35mm mono or equivalent braid) and the drag power needed for cod, bass, rays, and smoothhound. If fishing with lighter braid, a 4000–5000 class can work on lighter-tackle setups.

Not recommended. Freshwater reels are not built for saltwater exposure. Even with careful rinsing, the bearings, gears, and body materials will corrode faster than a purpose-built sea reel. If you fish saltwater regularly, invest in a reel rated for it from day one.

A fixed spool reel is easier to cast and more beginner-friendly. Line comes off the front of the spool without rotation. A multiplier rotates the spool during casting — this gives more control and is preferred by distance beach casters and boat anglers, but requires more practice to avoid tangles (known as 'bird's nests').

After every session, rinse under fresh running water and leave to dry before storage. Never use a pressure hose — this forces water into sealed areas. Once per season, strip and clean the reel, apply fresh reel grease to gears and fresh oil to bearings. Store in a reel case or bag, not in a damp tackle bag.

Braid gives superior sensitivity, longer casting distance, and much thinner diameter for the same breaking strain. For sea fishing, the main advantage is feeling the bottom and detecting bites. The trade-off is zero stretch (harder on knots and the angler's hands) and higher cost. Most experienced beach anglers use braid mainline with a 30ft mono or fluoro shock leader.

A baitrunner (free-spool) reel has a second, lighter drag setting that lets a fish take line freely without the reel fighting it. Useful for float fishing, live-baiting, and specimen work where you want a fish to run before you engage the main drag. Not essential for most beach or lure fishing.
