For cod and large bass, use 4/0–6/0 wide-gape hooks with bulky baits like lugworm cocktail or squid. For general beach fishing targeting mixed species including whiting, dabs, and rockling, 1/0–2/0 Aberdeen hooks are a good starting point. For small-mouthed species like dab and flounder, drop to a size 1.

A breakaway or grip lead has wire clips that dig into the seabed to hold your rig in strong tidal currents. When a fish takes and the rod bends, the wires fold back and release, letting the lead lift cleanly. Essential for UK beach fishing in tide. On calm, slow-moving ground, a fixed pear lead is simpler and more effective.

Most UK beach fishing uses 3–5oz leads. Use heavier weights (4–6oz) in strong tides and rough surf to hold bottom. On calm, flat ground with little tide, 2–3oz is often enough and less tiring to cast all day. Your rod casting weight should always accommodate the lead weight you're using.

Your swivel should be rated significantly higher than your mainline. For a standard 15–20lb mono or braid mainline beach setup, use swivels rated 50–80lb. For heavy boat fishing, 100lb+ swivels are appropriate. The swivel is a failure point — never go cheap here.
