Allcock Forceps

Overview

The Allcock Forceps are traditional locking fishing forceps designed for secure hook removal and precision gripping, available in six variants across 6", 8" and 10" lengths with straight or curved jaws.

Their long, narrow jaws reach into a fish's mouth more easily than conventional pliers, while finger-ring handles give the angler excellent control over the jaws. A ratchet-style locking mechanism built into the handles allows the jaws to stay clamped on a hook without requiring constant hand pressure, which is especially useful when a hook needs careful manipulation before removal.

These forceps suit general sea-fishing hook removal from the shore or boat, working well on species such as mackerel, bass, pollack, cod, whiting, pouting, wrasse and dogfish, provided the tool is matched to the hook size and position.

The 6" size is best suited to tackle-box use where portability matters, the 8" size offers a versatile middle ground for general sea fishing, and the 10" size gives extra reach for hooks positioned deeper in a fish's mouth or for larger sea fish.

Technical Insight

The choice between straight and curved jaws isn't cosmetic: straight jaws give a direct extension of the tool for general hook removal, rig making and handling swivels, while curved jaws provide an angled working end that can approach a hook from the side or work around awkward mouth shapes.

The scissor-style finger rings, unlike ordinary fishing pliers, allow the angler to grip the hook bend or shank precisely while keeping fingers further from the hook point. Rinsing with fresh water and drying thoroughly after saltwater use, paying attention to the hinge, locking teeth and jaw area, helps keep the locking mechanism working smoothly.
