Overview

The Fenix HM70R Rechargeable Headlamp is a heavy-duty head torch built around three distinct light sources: a 1600-lumen spotlight, a 400-lumen neutral-white floodlight and a dedicated red-light system. It's constructed from precision-machined A6061-T6 aluminium with a Type III hard-anodised anti-abrasive finish, giving it a tougher build than typical plastic-bodied head torches.

Operation is handled through a single large side switch despite the lamp offering eight total lighting outputs across its General and Functional groups. An electronic lockout feature also helps stop the lamp accidentally switching on inside a tackle bag.

The headlamp comes with a Fenix ARB-L21-5000 5000mAh rechargeable 21700 Li-ion battery included in the box, along with a USB-C charging cable, spare O-ring and documentation, so it's ready to charge and use straight away without buying a battery separately.

Perfect For

For sea fishing and shore fishing after dark, the 1600-lumen spotlight with its 186m beam distance is suited to finding a route across a beach, checking the waterline, locating tackle or navigating a dark coastal path. The 500-lumen High setting, with a published six-hour runtime, offers a more practical general-purpose option than running at full 1600-lumen Turbo output.

The separate neutral-white floodlight is arguably just as useful for anglers, providing a broad close-range beam for baiting hooks, tying rigs, changing traces, unhooking fish and finding tackle in a box. Its CRI >90 rating gives comparatively good colour rendering for these close-up jobs. The dedicated red light, with a published runtime of up to 400 hours constant or 800 hours flashing, is handy for working around your fishing position at night without using the main beam.

Technical Insight

The HM70R's IP68 dust/water rating is backed by a specific waterproof specification of 2 metres for 4 hours according to Fenix's UK distributor, plus 2-metre impact resistance — considerably more meaningful for wet UK shore fishing conditions than a generic "weather resistant" claim.

Charging is handled via an integrated USB-C port hidden behind a screw-down section to protect it from water and dirt, supporting charging at up to 2A for an approximate 4-hour full charge. The battery is replaceable, and Fenix also permits an 18650 Li-ion battery with the optional ALF-18 holder, though it's worth noting the newer ARB-L21-6000 and ARB-L21-6000B batteries are NOT compatible — the correct direct spare is the ARB-L21-5000.
