The Berkley Trilene 100% Fluorocarbon is a fluorocarbon leader and hooklength material manufactured from a proprietary 100% PVDF fluorocarbon formula, not a fluorocarbon-coated nylon mono.

This genuine construction means it delivers the properties fluorocarbon is known for throughout the entire line, rather than just on the surface. Berkley highlights low underwater visibility, excellent abrasion resistance, strong knot performance and dependable impact strength as the key characteristics of this material.

Its higher density compared to conventional nylon monofilament allows it to sink readily, helping reduce bow in the line and keeping presentations connected to your mainline with minimal surface disturbance. This fluorocarbon is well suited to UK sea-fishing lure leaders, particularly for bass, pollack and wrasse, where a clear, abrasion-resistant connection between braided mainline and lure is needed around rocky or mixed ground.

The 8kg/0.32mm variant is a good general-purpose choice for lighter bass and shore-lure fishing, while the 11.3kg/0.38mm option provides extra abrasion protection for rougher ground and stronger pollack and wrasse leaders. All three sizes can also be used as shore-fishing snoods and hooklengths, with the 4.9kg/0.25mm variant suited to finer presentation work where low visibility matters most.

Technical Insight

Because this is a genuine 100% PVDF fluorocarbon rather than a coated nylon, its abrasion resistance and low-visibility properties run through the whole diameter of the line, which is particularly valuable when a leader repeatedly contacts rock, reef, shell or weed. Its greater density than nylon monofilament also means it sinks more readily, useful for submerged lure and bait presentations, though this is worth bearing in mind if you're pairing it with a surface lure.

Fluorocarbon is considerably less stretchy than many nylon monofilaments, contributing to the shock and impact strength Berkley highlights, though it isn't completely stretch-free. Knot strength is rated highly, but correct knot tying is particularly important with fluorocarbon since poorly formed or over-tightened knots can weaken the material.
