Overview

Berkley Trilene Big Game Mono Leader is a heavy-duty clear nylon monofilament leader material built from Berkley's proven Trilene Big Game formula, engineered specifically as dedicated leader and trace material rather than reel-filling mainline.

Supplied on a 110yd/100m coil, this leader spans an enormous breaking strain range from 100lb through to 400lb, with diameters running from 0.99mm up to a substantial 2.00mm at the top end. Berkley highlights three headline properties across the range: extreme shock strength, excellent abrasion resistance and high knot strength.

Because it's clear rather than a bright colour, it's noticeably less conspicuous than standard coloured Trilene Big Game mainline, though it isn't optically equivalent to fluorocarbon - this is genuine nylon monofilament, not fluoro.

Perfect For

This leader material is aimed squarely at specialist sea anglers rather than everyday beach rigs. The lower-to-middle strengths work well as heavy mono leader or rubbing-leader material in shark setups, while the excellent abrasion resistance and heavy breaking strains also suit conger traces fished around rocky ground and wrecks.

It's equally well suited to constructing heavy saltwater boat traces where ordinary 40-80lb rig mono isn't substantial enough, and makes an excellent thick sacrificial rubbing leader between mainline and terminal tackle when fishing near structure. Note that heavy mono shouldn't automatically be treated as a substitute for wire where a fish's teeth can cut through it - suitability as a bite section depends on species and rig design.

Technical Insight

Nylon's controlled stretch is the key to the extreme shock strength Berkley specifies for this leader - unlike near-zero-stretch braid, the mono can absorb sudden loading from a powerful run, head shake or close-range surge from a big fish.

The heavier diameters in the range, from 200lb (1.49mm) up to 400lb (2.00mm), become genuinely substantial pieces of material, and a specialist Big Game retailer specifically recommends crimped connections using appropriately sized aluminium, copper or Nicopress-style sleeves once working at this thickness. Lighter breaking strains within the range can still be knotted directly to swivels and terminal tackle thanks to the high knot strength built into the formula.
