Berkley Trilene Big Game 100% Fluorocarbon Leader is a heavy-duty fluorocarbon leader and trace material built for sea anglers who need low underwater visibility combined with genuine strength and abrasion resistance. Unlike fluorocarbon-coated nylon, this is genuine 100% fluorocarbon throughout, giving it the density, sink rate and clarity properties that make fluorocarbon leader material so effective around structure and wary fish.

The range is stocked in four heavy breaking strains – 40lb, 50lb, 60lb and 80lb – covering diameters from 0.61mm right up to a substantial 0.91mm. As the breaking strain increases, spool length changes too: the 40lb and 50lb come on 100yd/91m spools, while the heavier 60lb and 80lb are supplied on 75yd/68m spools.

At 60lb and 80lb, this moves firmly into heavy trace territory – think heavy shore and boat traces, conger fishing, rubbing leaders and other demanding saltwater applications around rocks, reefs, wrecks and weed-covered ground. Technical Insight

As 100% fluorocarbon rather than fluorocarbon-coated nylon, this material has a higher density than nylon mono, so it sinks readily – useful for subsurface lure leaders and bait traces that need to get down in the water column quickly. Because it doesn't absorb water, it retains its strength and sensitivity even after extended submersion, unlike nylon which can weaken as it takes on moisture.

The combination of high abrasion resistance and good knot and impact strength is what makes it suitable as a genuine heavy leader rather than just heavy mono. That said, it's worth remembering fluorocarbon isn't wire: even at 80lb breaking strain, it shouldn't be treated as a substitute for a proper wire bite trace when targeting toothy species, since breaking strain and resistance to teeth are two different things entirely.
