Overview

The Penn Squall II Level Wind Left Hand is a saltwater conventional multiplier reel built for anglers who prefer a left-hand retrieve. Available in two sizes, SQLII20LWLH and SQLII30LWLH, it mirrors the proven performance of the standard right-hand Squall II Level Wind range.

Both sizes share the same core specification: a 4.9:1 gear ratio, 33lb HT-100 carbon-fibre drag, and a 3+1 shielded stainless-steel bearing system giving four bearings in total. The construction combines a lightweight graphite frame and sideplates with a forged and machined aluminium spool, a marine-grade bronze-alloy main gear and a stainless-steel pinion.

An automatic Level Wind evenly distributes line across the spool during retrieval, while PENN's Fast Gear Access Sideplate makes maintenance straightforward. This left-hand configuration lets anglers hold the rod in their right hand while winding with the left, a retrieve style many multiplier reel users prefer.

Perfect For

The 20LWLH is the more compact, general-purpose option, suited to bait fishing, drifting and bottom fishing, plus moderate wreck work from a boat. Its capacity for up to 455yd of 50lb braid makes it a versatile choice for typical UK inshore sea fishing.

The 30LWLH steps up into heavier territory, holding line up to 495yd of 80lb braid or 440yd of 25lb mono. This makes it better suited to heavier UK boat fishing, deeper water, wreck fishing and tougher bottom fishing where stronger line is needed.

Technical Insight

Despite the jump in line capacity, PENN keeps the 30LWLH's gearing and drag rating identical to the 20LWLH — both use 4.9:1 gearing and are rated to 14.9kg / 33lb maximum drag via the HT-100 carbon-fibre drag washers. The real distinction between the two sizes lies purely in spool capacity and the heavier line classes the 30 can handle.

PENN differentiates the main gear (marine-grade bronze alloy) from the pinion (stainless steel) rather than simply calling them 'brass gears', reflecting a mixed-material drivetrain built to balance strength and corrosion resistance. The 3+1 bearing system is specified as shielded stainless steel rather than sealed, contributing to smooth, consistent retrieve under load.
