Akios Fury GTX8

Overview

The AKIOS FURY GTX8 is a long-cast fixed spool reel built specifically for shore and beach casting. It's the current, upgraded version of the FURY range, replacing the older FURY FX8, and is now the specification listed on AKIOS's official site.

The reel is constructed around a high-strength graphite-composite body and rotor, keeping overall weight down to a remarkably light 560g. It runs on 6+1 IAR shielded stainless-steel bearings and a 4.6:1 gear ratio, paired with an ergonomic CNC-machined power handle and a large hollow bail arm.

Two anodised aluminium spools are supplied as standard, rather than the more common pairing of one aluminium spool with a cheaper graphite spare. This gives the GTX8 genuine flexibility for anglers who want to run two different line setups without compromise.

As a beach and shore fixed-spool reel, the FURY GTX8 suits general UK beach fishing, clean and mixed ground venues, estuary fishing and distance bait fishing. The long spool profile, slow oscillation and dual spool depths make it a practical all-round choice for anglers who fish varied shore marks.

The 280m shallow spool is well suited to everyday UK beach fishing where huge line reserves aren't needed, while the 640m deep spool is there for situations calling for heavier backing or greater capacity. Having both included means one reel can be quickly adapted to different sessions.

Technical Insight

AKIOS uses Slow Oscillation on the GTX8, which moves the spool more slowly during retrieval to lay the line more evenly along its length. Combined with a balanced rotor, this promotes cleaner line release from the spool, which AKIOS states improves smoothness and efficiency on long-distance casts.

The Anti-Twist Rotor Design is engineered to improve stability when the reel is loaded under pressure, which is particularly relevant given how much lighter this reel is than its FX8 predecessor while still being built as a full-size shore casting tool. The 6+1 IAR shielded stainless-steel bearings and Composite Tech Advanced Drag System round out a reel that AKIOS has clearly upgraded across nearly every component, from gearing speed to spool capacity and overall weight.
