Breakaway OTG Impact Shields

Overview

The Breakaway OTG Impact Shields are a captive bait-release clip system built for anglers who need their baited hook to stay securely locked in place even when the hook snood or trace goes slack.

Developed as an adaptation of Breakaway's original Impact Shield, the OTG version features a metal central locking pin that captures the hook during casting. Unlike the standard Impact Shield, which relies on a tensioned trace to keep the hook clipped, the OTG design physically holds the hook captive regardless of snood tension.

Each assembly incorporates a Breakaway Fastlink for attaching the lead or sinker, combining the bait-retention mechanism and lead connection into one compact terminal component. The shields are supplied in packs of four and are available in Red or Luminous colourways.

Perfect For

This design is particularly suited to anglers building pulley rigs, where a secure hook hold is essential throughout a powerful cast. It's also well suited to rigs using long traces or snoods, situations where an ordinary Impact Shield would normally require the trace to remain tight to keep the hook clipped.

Breakaway and Veals both identify large baits as a key application, since bigger baits can make it harder to maintain a tensioned snood. These characteristics make the OTG Impact a practical choice for UK shore, surf and beach fishing rigs where larger baits and longer hook lengths are commonly used.

Technical Insight

The key engineering difference is the metal central pin, which locks the hook in position so it doesn't drop away if the trace loses tension during the cast. The shield only releases the hook once water pressure acts on it as the rig hits the sea, giving a reliable secure-cast-then-release sequence.

Breakaway states the shield accommodates hooks up to size 8/0, depending on the hook's wire diameter, and advises keeping the hook bend clear of the bait to ensure the release mechanism operates smoothly. Because the hook doesn't depend on precise snood tension to stay clipped, anglers have more flexibility when setting up long-trace or pulley rig arrangements.
