Overview

The Gemini Splash Down Solo Bait Clips are locking impact-release bait clips designed for sea anglers who want secure, streamlined rigs during the cast. Developed from Gemini's original Splash Down sinker system, the Solo brings the same positive hook-locking mechanism to a standalone lead-link component, so it can be paired with a wide range of conventional fishing weights rather than being tied to one dedicated lead.

Each clip positively locks the baited hook directly behind the sinker, holding it securely in place throughout the casting stroke and flight. On contact with the water, the mechanism releases automatically, freeing the hook and bait to fish naturally.

Supplied in packs of 5, the Solo is available in two colourways: a bright Red version (G2100) for easy identification while rigging, and a Luminous/Glow version (G2100/1) for improved visibility in low light.

Perfect For

The Splash Down Solo is particularly well suited to Off-The-Ground (OTG) and distance shore casting, where Gemini specifically promotes the locking system as a way to keep the baited hook secure while the rig is laid out before the casting stroke begins. It's a strong choice for clipped-down rigs, including single-hook and clipped Pennel-style traces, where positive hook retention matters more than simple open-clip tension.

Because the current improved version accepts hooks up to around Size 6/0, it's capable of handling substantial UK shore baits such as squid, mackerel, sandeel, crab and fish/squid cocktails, not just smaller match-style presentations. The Luminous version adds a practical edge for night fishing and low-light rig preparation, while the Red version simply makes rigging easier to see in daylight.

Technical Insight

Unlike a conventional open bait clip, which relies on snood tension to keep the hook seated, the Splash Down Solo uses an engineered locking mechanism that positively retains the baited hook behind the sinker until the rig hits the water. This removes the risk of the hook coming away prematurely if the snood goes slack during the casting movement, and it allows the baited hook to travel immediately behind the sinker rather than flapping independently on a long snood, which can help reduce bait movement, drag and tangling in flight.

Because the release system is built into a separate lead-link unit rather than a dedicated sinker, the Solo can be tied directly into the rig or attached via a rig link, and used with plain leads, grip leads, breakout-style leads and other conventional sinkers with a suitable attachment point. This gives rig builders the versatility of the Splash Down locking principle without being restricted to a single style of lead.
