Overview
The Breakaway Escape Link is an adjustable rotten-bottom lead-release system built for rough-ground sea fishing, designed to free a snagged sinker without relying on a conventional monofilament weak link.
Each pack contains six Escape Links (product code EL1), built around a sprung release mechanism and a sliding plastic locking ring that holds the sinker securely in place during casting.
Once the rig lands in the water, water pressure shifts the locking ring away from its casting position, arming the release mechanism so the lead can be sacrificed if it becomes jammed in rocks or kelp.
Perfect For
The Escape Link is built for rock marks, kelp beds, broken ground and other snaggy shore marks where there's a real risk of the sinker becoming trapped.
It suits anglers fishing rough-ground shore rigs who want to avoid losing an entire trace - and any hooked fish - simply because the lead has wedged into a crevice.
The link can be tied directly into a rig or added to an existing lead clip setup, with no specialist Escape-Link-specific trace required.
Technical Insight
Unlike a traditional rotten-bottom link that relies on a weaker length of monofilament to part under strain, the Escape Link uses a mechanical sprung release pin, so a weak mono link isn't required for the system to work.
The release tension is adjustable, with the amount of force needed to trip the mechanism altered by changing the angle of the locking pin - letting anglers tailor the setting to different ground conditions rather than being locked into a fixed breaking strain.
The sliding plastic locking ring also means the link is rated safe for powerful casting, locking the pin in place during the cast and only disengaging once the rig is in the water.

Does the Breakaway Escape Link need a weak mono link?
No. The Escape Link uses a mechanical sprung release mechanism instead of a conventional monofilament weak link, though Breakaway notes some anglers may still choose to combine it with a light weak link depending on their setup.
How does the Breakaway Escape Link work?
Before casting, a sliding plastic locking ring is pushed down to lock the sprung release pin so the sinker stays attached during a powerful cast. Once the rig hits the water, pressure moves the ring away from its locked position, allowing the pin to release the lead if it becomes firmly snagged on rough ground.
Is the release tension on the Escape Link adjustable?
Yes. The overload/release setting can be adjusted by altering the angle of the locking pin, letting you change how much force is needed to trip the mechanism for different fishing conditions.
How many Breakaway Escape Links come in a pack?
Each pack contains 6 Escape Links (product code EL1).
