Overview

The PENN Pursuit V Spinning Reel is a fixed-spool saltwater reel that PENN has specifically designed to cover inshore, surf and boat fishing, making it a dedicated sea-fishing reel rather than a freshwater model repurposed for saltwater use.

It's built around a lightweight, corrosion-resistant graphite body paired with a machined and anodised aluminium spool, and drag duties are handled by PENN's proven HT-100 carbon-fibre drag washer system for smooth, dependable performance under load.

Inside, four sealed stainless-steel ball bearings work alongside an Instant Anti-Reverse bearing for five bearings in total, giving the Pursuit V a solid, corrosion-resistant foundation for regular saltwater use.

Perfect For

The Pursuit V range spans six sizes, and each one suits a slightly different style of UK sea fishing. The 2500 is suited to very light saltwater spinning and LRF-style work, while the 3000 is a particularly sensible size for mobile bass lure fishing from the shore.

Step up to the 4000 for heavier bass lure fishing, pollack and mackerel, or general shore spinning where more line capacity is wanted. The 5000 bridges heavier shore lure work and lighter boat applications, the 6000 handles heavier shore or boat fishing needing more line capacity and power, and the 8000 sits at the heavy end of the family for tougher boat and surf fishing.

Technical Insight

Drag output and gearing change meaningfully as you move up the range, from 4.5kg max drag and a 6.2:1 ratio on the 2500 up to 11.3kg and a 5.3:1 ratio on the 8000 — so a larger Pursuit V isn't simply a bigger spool, it's a genuinely different tool for heavier applications. The jump from the 4000 (357g) to the 5000 (556g) is particularly notable, reflecting a real step up in build rather than a small size increment.

The Superline Spool is designed so braid can be tied directly to the spool without needing a mono backing first, which simplifies respooling with braided lines. Built-in Line Capacity Rings then give a quick visual check of how much line remains on the spool while fishing.
