Overview

The PENN Spinfisher VII Live Liner is a saltwater spinning reel range that adds PENN's adjustable Live Liner secondary drag system to the proven Spinfisher VII platform. Identifiable by the LLEU suffix, it's available in four sizes - 2500, 4500, 6500 and 8500 - each built around a Full Metal Body and sideplate, CNC Gear Technology, a brass main gear and a 5+1 sealed stainless-steel bearing system.

Underneath the Live Liner mechanism sits the same serious Spinfisher VII package found on the standard models, including IPX5 sealed protection and PENN's HT-100 carbon-fibre main fighting drag. Gear ratios and main drag ratings across the range match their equivalent standard Spinfisher VII sizes, so the Live Liner versions add functionality without compromising the core saltwater build.

Perfect For

Live Liner is designed specifically for bait fishing, where a fish taking a bait can pull line against a lighter, independently adjustable secondary drag rather than immediately feeling the main fighting drag. Turning the handle automatically disengages Live Liner and switches the reel back onto its main HT-100 drag, ready to fight the fish.

Across the range, the 2500LL suits light inshore and estuary bait fishing, the 4500LL works as a general-purpose shore or heavier inshore bait reel, the 6500LL steps up to heavy shore bait fishing, rock fishing and boat bait work, and the 8500LL - with its 40lb/18.1kg max drag and 555yd of 65lb braid capacity - is suited to heavy-duty boat and heavy saltwater bait fishing.

Technical Insight

The IPX5 sealed body and spool design is intended to stop saltwater spray and wave splash getting into the gearbox or drag system, which matters on a Live Liner reel that often sits on a rod rest for extended periods while bait fishing. The Full Metal Body and sideplate adds rigidity to keep the CNC-machined brass main gear correctly aligned under load, which becomes increasingly important as main drag output climbs from 15lb on the 2500 up to 40lb on the 8500.

The 5+1 sealed stainless-steel bearing system (6 bearings total) is sealed against saltwater ingress, offering more protection than the shielded or unsealed bearings found on lower-end reels. Retrieve rates rise through the range from 84cm on the 2500LL to 107cm on the 6500LL and 8500LL, helping recover slack line quickly when picking up terminal tackle.
