Penn Battle IV

Overview

The PENN Battle IV is a saltwater spinning reel range spanning seven sizes, from the compact 2500 through to the enormous 10000, built around a rigid Full Metal body and sideplate rather than a lightweight graphite chassis. This rigid construction supports PENN's precision CNC Gear Technology, giving the drivetrain a stable foundation that keeps gears correctly aligned when heavy loads are applied.

Every size in the range shares the same core construction package: Full Metal Body, CNC Gear Technology, HT-100 carbon-fibre drag washers, a 5+1 sealed stainless-steel bearing system and PENN's Hydro Armor protection, which seals critical areas against water intrusion. Maximum drag varies substantially across the range, from 5.4kg (12lb) on the 2500 up to a huge 18.1kg (40lb) on the 10000, so the larger models are genuinely different fishing tools rather than simply bigger spools.

Each reel also features a Superline Spool, designed to let braided line grip securely without needing a mono backing layer, plus Line Capacity Rings machined into the spool for an instant visual check of remaining line - particularly useful on the high-capacity 6000-10000 sizes.

Perfect For

The smaller 2500 and 3000 sizes suit light saltwater lure fishing - think bass lure fishing from the shore, estuary and harbour work, pollack spinning and light rock spinning. The 4000 steps up capacity while keeping the same fast 6.2:1 gearing and 6.8kg drag, making it a solid all-round shore spinning reel for UK sea fishing.

The 5000 and 6000 move into heavier spinning and general sea-fishing territory, with drag jumping to 11.3kg/25lb and considerably heavier line capacity suited to heavier rock fishing, boat work and jigging. The 8000 and 10000 are aimed at genuinely heavy saltwater applications, with the 10000's 18.1kg/40lb drag and enormous braid capacity marking it out as a specialist heavy-duty option rather than an everyday spinning reel.

Technical Insight

The Full Metal Body and sideplate aren't just about strength for its own sake - the rigid chassis keeps PENN's CNC-cut gears properly aligned under load, which is exactly what a workhorse saltwater reel needs when fighting fish on heavy drag settings. The HT-100 carbon-fibre drag system backs this up with smooth, powerful stopping power that scales from 5.4kg on the 2500 to 18.1kg on the 10000.

Hydro Armor adds a further layer of environmental protection by sealing critical areas of the reel against water intrusion, which matters given the salt spray, rain and general UK coastal weather these reels will face - though PENN doesn't market the Battle IV as fully waterproof, so normal rinsing and maintenance after saltwater use is still recommended. Combined with sealed 5+1 stainless-steel bearings, this construction is aimed squarely at anglers who need a dependable, durable saltwater workhorse rather than an ultralight finesse reel.
